Al Ahly Appoints Hussein Ammouta as New Head Coach Following Thorup's Departure

In a significant move for the club, Al Ahly has officially appointed Moroccan coach Hussein Ammouta as their new head coach on a two-year contract. This announcement was made by the Egyptian football club on Monday, June 15. Ammouta, who is 56 years old, has an impressive resume that includes a successful stint as the manager of the Jordanian national team and a notable victory in the CAF Champions League with Wydad Casablanca.

Ammouta's coaching career is marked by his triumph in the 2017 African Champions League, where he led Wydad to victory over none other than Al Ahly, while also securing the Moroccan league title during that season. His expertise extends beyond club football; he also guided Morocco to win the African Nations Championship in 2021 and has enjoyed success in the Qatari league with Al Sadd. Additionally, he has had managerial roles at Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates and with the Jordan national team, further solidifying his credentials as a seasoned coach.

This appointment comes just ten days after Al Ahly mutually agreed to part ways with Danish coach Jess Thorup, following a less than satisfactory campaign. Thorup had initially joined the club in October and celebrated a victory in the Egyptian Super Cup with a 2-0 win over Zamalek. However, as the season progressed, the team's performance dipped, culminating in a third-place finish in the league, which unfortunately means they will not participate in next season’s CAF Champions League.
