Akhnoosh Launches Regional Health Group in Fes-Meknes to Enhance Healthcare Quality

Akhnoosh's Initiative for Improved Healthcare

On June 10, 2026, in a significant step towards the enhancement of healthcare services, the Prime Minister of Morocco, Aziz Akhnoosh, presided over the first board meeting of the newly established regional health group in Fes-Meknes. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at reforming the national healthcare system and activating regional health groups across the country. During the meeting, Akhnoosh emphasized the critical role of this group in establishing a more effective health governance framework that is closer to the citizens, thereby improving the overall quality of healthcare services and fostering better coordination among various health institutions within the region.

Addressing Healthcare Access and Needs

The Fes-Meknes region, which is home to approximately 4.5 million residents, accounts for nearly 12% of Morocco's total population. Prime Minister Akhnoosh underscored the importance of ensuring equitable access to healthcare, particularly for the rural populations that constitute a significant portion of the region's demographic. He encouraged stakeholders to expedite the development and rehabilitation of regional and local hospitals as part of an urgent plan aimed at improving healthcare services and accessibility for citizens.

The health infrastructure in Fes-Meknes includes a network of 427 primary healthcare facilities, alongside five university hospitals and 14 regional and local hospitals, led by the Hassan II University Hospital in Fes. During the board meeting, an action plan and budget for the health group for the year 2026 were presented, along with the approval of several projects and organizational decisions aimed at enhancing the management of the healthcare sector in the region. Participants highlighted the necessity of streamlining treatment pathways and strengthening the integration of primary healthcare with hospital services, while continuing to upgrade health facilities and accelerating digital transformation. These efforts are crucial to ensure high-quality healthcare services that adequately meet the needs of the Fes-Meknes population.
