Chasing Dreams Against All Odds
Johanna Ebner, a 25-year-old golfer from Villach, is determined to pursue her dreams relentlessly, even in the face of adversity. As she prepares for her journey to Morocco for the first golf tournament of the year, she reflects on her aspirations. "In my tournament calendar for 2026, I have all 20 events of the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) scheduled across 13 countries. Currently, I am heading to Fès in Morocco, where my season kicks off. From there until November, I will be continuously competing in numerous tournaments, exploring new locations, and gathering countless experiences. My ultimate goal is to secure a tour card for the Ladies European Tour (LET) by finishing in the top seven of the annual rankings," she explains with enthusiasm. However, she emphasizes that while this goal is significant, an equally important focus for her is 2026 being her first full year as a professional on this prestigious tour. It’s a time for her to learn, develop, and gradually acclimate to the professional level.
The Reality of Professional Golf
Golf, often perceived as an elite sport, poses unique challenges in terms of sponsorship and financial viability. "Sponsoring isn't as straightforward as one might think. For large companies, I often remain too small or 'not interesting enough', given that golf is considered a niche sport. I've also been told that my social media reach is insufficient," Johanna candidly shares. Her response is clear: "I am not an influencer; I am a competitive athlete. I share insights into my life, travels, and daily routines—genuine and authentic, not staged. My focus is on my athletic development, and I refuse to be stressed by follower counts." This authenticity is what makes it challenging to find companies that appreciate her approach, devoid of superficiality and the noise of social media. The path to the top is arduous and requires sacrifices. "Primarily, it’s about covering the costs of my season. Currently, my main objective is to break even," Johanna explains transparently. Although prize money on the LETAS has increased in recent years, it remains insufficient for a sustainable living. Realistically, she must finish in the top five during tournament weeks, which is a formidable challenge considering the fields consist of 100 to 130 competitors. Nevertheless, she maintains a long-term perspective on her career.
"Like in any sport, one starts at the bottom and works their way up step by step. My goal is clear: to continuously develop to the level of the LETAS, where the financial opportunities are significantly different. My base has been back in Villach since I completed my studies in Kansas. Here, I have my family, my support network, and access to crucial resources in Klagenfurt and at the Golf Club St. Veit Längsee."
