Zambia Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Sovereignty Over Sahara

Zambia has once again expressed its unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity and the Moroccan identity of the Sahara region, as stated by Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday. This declaration comes in light of the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which recognizes the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco. This resolution is considered the only serious, credible, and sustainable solution to the ongoing artificial dispute concerning the Sahara.

This strong position was articulated in a joint communiqué issued in Rabat, following discussions between Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and Zambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mulambo Haimbe, who is currently engaged in a working visit to Morocco. During these talks, Haimbe reiterated Zambia’s support for UN efforts aimed at resolving this regional dispute, endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan as the sole credible and realistic avenue for resolution. He emphasized that this initiative lays down a pragmatic and constructive framework for achieving a lasting and mutually agreeable political solution.

Furthermore, Mr. Bourita acknowledged the positive trajectory of relations between Morocco and Zambia in recent years, particularly noting the opening of the Zambian Embassy in Rabat and its Consulate General in Laayoune in October 2020, which have fostered closer ties between the two nations. Zambia's position on the Sahara aligns with a growing international consensus backing Morocco's autonomy plan as the genuine resolution to the regional conflict. To date, over 20 countries have opened consulates in the southern cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, while more than 110 UN member states have voiced their support for the Autonomy Plan, recognizing it as a credible foundation for a lasting political settlement.
