Tanger's Ambitious Airport Expansion Project
On May 7, 2026, the National Airports Office (ONDA) announced the initiation of an extensive expansion project at the Ibn Battouta Airport in Tanger. This strategic initiative is aimed at modernizing airport infrastructure in response to the continuous increase in air traffic in northern Morocco. As part of this ambitious project, a consortium of four companies has been selected to undertake the estimated 1.9 billion dirham construction effort. The planned expansion includes the addition of approximately 55,000 square meters of new facilities, which will significantly enhance the airport's capabilities. Once completed, the airport's capacity is expected to accommodate nearly 7 million passengers annually, marking a substantial increase in its current handling capabilities.
Enhancing Morocco's Airport Infrastructure
This significant investment is a component of a broader national plan to modernize Moroccan airports in accordance with international standards. The primary objectives of the project include improving service quality, expanding reception areas, and facilitating the movement of travelers. With this new logistical infrastructure, Tanger is poised to strengthen its status as the main air transport hub in the northern region of the country, directly responding to the area's robust economic and tourism growth. The expansion of the Ibn Battouta Airport not only promises to enhance travel efficiency but also reflects Morocco's commitment to developing its aviation sector in alignment with global best practices.
