Yéhvann Diouf Reflects on a Tumultuous Season and AFCON Triumph

Yéhvann Diouf's Journey Through a Rollercoaster Season

As the football world turns its attention to the upcoming match between Olympique de Marseille and Nice this Sunday evening, Yéhvann Diouf, the Senegalese international, took a moment to share his reflections on a season filled with ups and downs in an exclusive interview with L’Equipe. Having spent a considerable portion of the season on the sidelines, Diouf's emotional journey culminated in a significant moment: the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. The match, according to the former Reims player, was nothing short of extraordinary. “I would have preferred, like many, that it had happened differently. With victory at the end, of course. But differently overall. There are lots of things that have tarnished the image of the federations, of the CAN, of the continent. But at the end of the day, what matters is that the match came to an end and that Senegal won,” he remarked.

Despite his focus on the thrilling victory of the Lions of Téranga, secured by Pape Gueye's decisive goal, Diouf chose to sidestep the controversies that followed. The decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award the victory to Morocco post-match—a matter currently under review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport—was notably absent from his comments. Nevertheless, Diouf was in the thick of the action, witnessing various incidents unfold, including one that generated considerable discussion: the infamous towel incident that he had to protect from Moroccan players. “I realized it when we got back,” Diouf explained, “and people were talking to me about it all the time, thanking me. The only thing I have to say is that if it allowed Édouard (Mendy) to be in the best conditions, so much the better. But it would have been better if that hadn’t happened. Yes, it can be funny, add a little folklore. But above all, this must never happen; my safety has been compromised.”
