U.S. Military Continues Search for Missing Soldiers Off Morocco's Coast

Ongoing Search Operations in Morocco

As of May 4, 2026, a dedicated U.S. military team is actively engaged in search and rescue operations off the coast of Tan-Tan, Morocco, following the disappearance of two soldiers on May 2. These soldiers went missing near a seaside cliff during a major military exercise, prompting a swift and comprehensive response from the U.S. Armed Forces. Colonel Alex C. Tignor, a spokesman for the Army’s Southern European Task Force, Africa, noted that the search area has expanded significantly, covering over 4,600 square miles of ocean and coastal terrain. Each day, nearly 1,200 additional square miles are being incorporated into the search, guided by ocean current modeling.

International Collaboration and Technological Integration

The search operation, which commenced with significant international collaboration, includes support from Morocco, France, and various other partners. The two missing soldiers were off-duty at the time and were among thousands of international personnel participating in African Lion, the largest annual exercise conducted by U.S. Africa Command. This year's drills were held across four African nations, including Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, with the Southern European Task Force, Africa leading the operations.

As the military exercise transitioned into a real-world search mission, troops leveraged advanced technologies being tested during the drills, including artificial intelligence. Tignor highlighted the integration of air, land, and sea assets, utilizing AI and unmanned systems from over ten different vendors. This innovative approach allowed officials to sift through vast amounts of data gathered from military sensors on drones, boats, and jet skis, as reported by CBS News from Agadir, Morocco. Army Lt. Col. Ramone Leonguerrero emphasized the importance of utilizing every available resource to enhance the search efforts.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the soldiers’ disappearance have been gradually emerging, primarily through anonymous sources, with some inconsistencies noted. It is believed that at least one soldier fell from a cliff during a sunset hike, leading nearby hikers to attempt a human chain rescue, which ultimately failed. Reports indicate that one or two rescuers may have also fallen into the ocean during the attempt. The ongoing search involves a coordinated effort from U.S. and Moroccan helicopters, surveillance drones, and naval frigates, in addition to Moroccan mountaineers and divers.

The operation features participation from various U.S. military units, including Air Force, Marine Corps, and Army Special Forces, alongside members of the Vicenza-based 173rd Airborne Brigade. While the military has not disclosed the specific units involved with the missing service members, they have confirmed that an investigation and rescue operation are underway. Approximately 5,000 personnel from over 40 nations, including NATO allies, were anticipated to take part in the Moroccan phase of the exercise. Although the exercise has concluded, Tignor stated that a contingent will remain to oversee the command-and-control operations related to the search. He expressed gratitude toward Moroccan partners for their continued support in this challenging operation.
