Unveiling Morocco's New Architectural Marvel: The 250-Metre Mohammed VI Tower

Mohammed VI Tower: A Stunning Addition to Morocco's Skyline

The magnificent Mohammed VI Tower, a 250-meter tall skyscraper, has officially opened its doors, marking its status as the tallest building in Morocco and the third tallest across the African continent. This architectural masterpiece, designed by the renowned firms Rafael de La-Hoz and Hakim Benjelloun, stands proudly along the picturesque Bou Regreg river, strategically positioned between the vibrant Moroccan capital of Rabat and the historic city of Salé. The tower, which features an impressive design reminiscent of a rocket, boasts a total of 55 stories, where modernity meets functionality.

This striking structure is not just a visual spectacle; it is a multifunctional space housing a variety of amenities. Within its elegantly curved form, occupants will find offices, luxurious apartments, an exhibition area, an observatory, and a prestigious Waldorf Astoria hotel, all designed to offer an unparalleled experience. The base of the tower serves as a bustling hub, featuring a welcoming reception lobby, multiple dining options, additional exhibition spaces, and even a branch of a local bank, ensuring that both residents and visitors have access to all essential services.

Innovative Design and Sustainable Features

The inception of the Mohammed VI Tower began in 2017, driven by the vision of Moroccan billionaire Othman Benjelloun, who is also the CEO of Bank of Africa. Developed by O Tower, a subsidiary of Benjelloun's O Capital Group, the tower's design reflects both innovation and homage to history. The unique rocket-like shape was inspired by Benjelloun's visit to a NASA flight simulation back in 1969, symbolizing aspirations and progress. Notably, the south-facing facade is crafted with a photovoltaic double skin that not only harnesses solar energy but also provides effective thermal protection, showcasing a commitment to sustainable architecture.

Interior spaces within the tower were meticulously designed by the French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, who aimed to create timeless elegance through a carefully selected palette of materials. This includes luxurious white marble, rich bronze, brushed brass, exquisite Cordoba leather, intricate ceramic zellige tiles, and warm wood paneling, all contributing to a sophisticated ambiance that resonates with residents and visitors alike.

At 250 meters, the Mohammed VI Tower has eclipsed the previous titleholder, the 210-meter Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, to proudly claim its place as the tallest building in Morocco. It also ranks as the third tallest completed skyscraper in Africa, following the Great Mosque of Algiers Tower in Algeria and Egypt's Iconic Tower. Although the Alamein Iconic Tower in Egypt is on track for completion this year and is expected to surpass the height of Mohammed VI Tower, the latter remains a significant achievement in architectural advancement for the region.

In light of the recent architectural boom across Africa, Dezeen has explored whether such towering constructions are reflective of genuine progress or mere vanity projects. Meanwhile, in Morocco, the architectural community is abuzz with projects such as the Grand Stade Hassan II stadium, which is being developed by Oualalou + Choi and Populous for the 2030 World Cup, anticipated to become the world’s largest football stadium.
