Celebrating Moroccan Culture in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin
The Friends of Morocco Association in Cotentin, established 25 years ago, is preparing for its annual Couscous Evening on May 23, 2026, at the Europe Hall in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, Manche. This cherished event serves as a warm welcome to Moroccan culture and has seen as many as 150 participants in previous years. According to the president, Belkacem Seghrouchni, this tradition symbolizes the spirit of sharing and community that the association was founded upon.
A Rich Heritage and Community Engagement
Founded in 2001, the Friends of Morocco Association originated from a close-knit group of Moroccan families who settled in the region due to significant construction projects. Many of these families hail from Kelaat M'Gouna, located in the stunning "Valley of Roses" near Ouarzazate. This cultural connection has been pivotal in shaping the association's initiatives, which include culinary workshops, language courses, and various cultural events. Over the years, the group has also engaged in humanitarian efforts, such as supporting a beekeeping cooperative and enhancing educational facilities in Morocco.
In recent years, the association has shifted its focus towards the northeastern region of Morocco, particularly around Berkane. In collaboration with the ESIX Engineering School, students from Cotentin have been working on an irrigation project that supports the region’s renowned citrus orchards. Furthermore, the association has funded essential medical equipment and infrastructure projects that benefit local communities.
The upcoming Couscous Evening promises to be a delightful culinary experience, featuring traditional dishes, mint tea, and desserts for a modest fee of €20 for adults and €10 for children aged 6 to 10. Reservations can be made by contacting Joëlle at 06 12 37 11 22 or Anne-Marie at 06 05 08 49 21. This event not only enriches the local community but also strengthens ties between Cotentin and Morocco, enhancing cultural exchange and solidarity.
