Brutal Murder of a Taxi Driver in Casablanca
The investigation into the brutal murder of a 74-year-old taxi driver in Casablanca is currently at a standstill, despite the arrest of two suspects, who are former colleagues of the victim and also taxi drivers. Their persistent silence has raised doubts regarding the motives behind this violent crime. According to the daily newspaper Assabah, the suspects were apprehended on Saturday based on intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), in both Oujda and Casablanca, where they had maintained a close professional relationship with the victim for many years. All three had served together on the board of a taxi union in the city, with the victim holding a key position.
However, this previously amicable relationship appears to have devolved into inexplicable enmity, leading the two men to plot their colleague's demise. The elderly driver was lured into a trap and suffered a particularly savage fate; reports indicate that his fingers were severed, suggesting he may have attempted to defend himself against knife attacks that were delivered with such force that they severed his phalanges. As of Saturday evening, the primary suspect had categorically refused to explain the reasons behind the murder, shrouding the case in mystery.
Investigation Progress and Community Impact
Initially, investigators had leaned towards the theory that a gang was targeting taxi drivers for robbery, particularly during nighttime hours. However, this hypothesis was quickly dismissed after the victim's vehicle was found, with its financial earnings intact, ruling out any robbery motive. Suspicion then turned to two individuals captured on surveillance footage inside a vehicle, leading to their identification and subsequent arrests. Technical investigations and thorough inquiries conducted by the judicial police facilitated their capture in two distinct cities.
Adding to the perplexity surrounding this crime, the victim was known for his integrity, dedication to his profession, and generosity, often providing transportation to vulnerable individuals free of charge. This makes the brutality of his murder all the more incomprehensible. In a statement, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) confirmed that judicial police officers in Casablanca, assisted by those from the Ain Chock judicial brigade, arrested two taxi drivers aged 40 and 48, suspected of involvement in the fatal assault on their colleague.
The investigation began on April 26, following the discovery of the victim's body in the Ain Chock neighborhood. Forensic examinations revealed evidence of violence inflicted with a sharp weapon. Field searches and detailed verifications led to the identification and arrest of the two suspects, who were taken into custody on the same day in different locations.
