Massive Summer Transit Operation Planned for 2026
Spanish and Moroccan authorities convened last Wednesday in Tangier for the 37th meeting of the Hispano-Moroccan Joint Commission, focusing on the preparation for the Operation Paso del Estrecho. This extensive summer transit initiative aims to facilitate the movement of over 3.5 million travelers and approximately 800,000 vehicles between Europe and the Maghreb in 2026. This annual operation, which runs from June 15 to September 15, involves the main Spanish ports connected to Morocco and is crucial for managing the expected influx of summer travelers.
During this meeting, high-ranking officials responsible for migration, port operations, security, and health from both countries gathered to discuss strategies for the upcoming campaign. Anticipating an increase in travel this year, officials estimate a 3% rise compared to the previous year, potentially leading to a new historical record for this seasonal migration movement.
Enhanced Operational Framework for Increased Efficiency
The plans established for 2026 build upon successful strategies implemented in previous years, emphasizing the importance of maintaining smooth traffic flow, reducing waiting times at ports, and providing support to travelers from the Maghreb throughout their journey. The operation is structured around a fleet scheme designed to distribute maritime crossings, rotations, and boarding capacities among the various involved ports.
This year's operation will engage nine Spanish port infrastructures and over 31,500 personnel, marking an approximate 10% increase compared to 2025. Additionally, both nations have agreed on several technical adjustments aimed at minimizing congestion during peak summer periods. Furthermore, Madrid is set to introduce a digital system to collect real-time data regarding traffic, port movements, weather conditions, and any incidents that may affect crossings between the two continents.
