Sumar Calls for Immediate and Decisive Government Response to Immigration Crisis
The political group Sumar has pointed fingers at Morocco and the European Union's border externalization policies, attributing the "extremely serious situation" in Ceuta to these actions. They argue that this situation is not coincidental but rather a deliberate strategy that has led to "hundreds of deaths," where human lives have been used as leverage for political maneuvering against the Spanish Government. They emphasized that such actions are intolerable and must not go unpunished.
In a recent statement, Sumar criticized the Popular Party (PP) and Vox for displaying "repugnant and intolerable racism." This critique comes in light of the opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who suggested in an interview with Europa Press that Ceuta should be quarantined due to "health risks" from scabies or tuberculosis. Sumar condemned Feijóo's statements as "lies" concerning the health situation in Ceuta, claiming they mark the latest episode in a series of August's falsehoods and attacks against vulnerable populations, particularly children whose rights must be upheld. They urged him to retract his statements, apologize, and adhere to factual data and scientific evidence.
Furthermore, Sumar expressed serious concern over demands from both the opposition parties and certain voices within the European Union advocating for the suspension of fundamental rights and the expulsion of individuals seeking help and a dignified life in Spain. They argued that instead of punitive measures, Europe should activate international solidarity mechanisms that are at least as robust and well-funded as its border policies.
In this context, Sumar called for a swift and effective reception action from the government, resonating with the initiatives being developed by the Ministry of Childhood and Youth. They stressed that the welcoming of migrants, especially minors, is not just an option but a moral obligation, urging the government to resist the "blackmail" of PP and Vox regarding human rights issues. They cautioned against accepting the dual approach of those who pressure the government with one hand while obstructing its actions at the regional level with the other.
Moreover, Sumar affirmed that Spain is a welcoming nation, possessing ample resources to execute this mission and institutional mechanisms to ensure it. They emphasized that time is of the essence, urging civil society, particularly non-governmental organizations active in the field, to be heard and for their needs and proposals to be supported.
Finally, Sumar called upon all political forces to push the autonomous communities that are "blocking reception efforts," particularly for minors, to cease the impunity with which the racism and expulsion strategies of PP and Vox are being implemented.
