Significant Moroccan Delegation Visits the U.S. National Archives Following Defense Advisory Committee Session

Moroccan Officials Explore Historical Ties at U.S. National Archives

On April 17, 2026, a notable Moroccan delegation, led by the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government responsible for National Defense Administration, along with the Chief of Staff of the Royal Armed Forces and the Commander of the Southern Region, embarked on an important visit to the U.S. National Archives. This visit marked the conclusion of the 14th session of the Moroccan-American Defense Advisory Committee, which took place in Washington, D.C. from April 14 to 16 of the same month. The delegation's trip underscored the historical and diplomatic ties between Morocco and the United States, shining a light on the longstanding friendship that has flourished since the signing of the Moroccan-American Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786.

During their visit, the delegation had the opportunity to view significant historical documents that underscore the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations. Among these was the aforementioned treaty, which was signed by Sultan Sidi Muhammad ben Abdallah and the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. This document not only highlights the mutual respect and cooperation that characterize the bilateral relationship but also represents the United States' oldest ongoing diplomatic relationship, founded on principles of friendship and collaboration between the Moroccan and American peoples.

Following their exploration of the archives, the Moroccan delegation proceeded to Arlington National Cemetery, where they laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, paying tribute to those who have served in the defense of freedom and democracy. This gesture was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the pursuit of these ideals, further solidifying the shared values between Morocco and the United States.
