Senegal Basketball Federation Addresses Concerns Over Women's Team Delegation Return

The Senegal Basketball Federation (FSBB) has stepped forward to clarify the circumstances surrounding the staggered return of the national women’s team following their participation in a tournament in Mexico. In a statement released on August 23, 2026, the FSBB emphasized that there were no delays recorded in the team's return and outlined the details regarding travel arrangements, accommodations, and the handling of the players’ luggage.

The first group of the delegation successfully returned to Dakar on Sunday, August 23, from Mexico, traveling through the Schengen area on an Air France flight. Meanwhile, a second group, which had arrived in Mexico via Casablanca and São Paulo, is scheduled to depart on Monday, August 24, and is expected to land in Dakar on Wednesday, August 26. The FSBB noted that the original return date for the entire delegation was set for August 24, the day following the tournament’s conclusion, which was held on August 23.

"No delays have been recorded," the Federation emphasized, explaining that efforts were made to expedite the return of the players following the team's elimination from the tournament. This adjustment for the first group was facilitated through an agreement with Air France.

For the second group, however, the travel route through Casablanca and São Paulo did not allow for a similar change. The Federation assured that they had arranged accommodations for the affected members at a five-star hotel conveniently located near the Mexico City airport.

Additionally, the FSBB provided clarification regarding the issue of luggage. According to the Federation, all bags that arrived late in Mexico have been retrieved by their respective owners. While awaiting their luggage delivery, financial assistance was made available to the players to purchase personal items.

The FSBB also reminded stakeholders that the Casablanca-São Paulo route was the only available option for reaching Mexico without transiting through the Schengen area. They ensured that during prolonged layovers, players were accommodated in hotels or VIP lounges.

These explanations come at a crucial time as the Federation calls on the Senegalese basketball community to rally around the men’s national team. The Lions are set to compete at the Dakar Arena for the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers for Qatar 2027, scheduled from August 27 to 30, 2026.
