Search Underway for Missing U.S. Service Members in Morocco During Military Exercises

Ongoing Search Efforts for U.S. Soldiers in Morocco

In a concerning development, two U.S. Army soldiers are currently unaccounted for in southwestern Morocco, following their participation in the annual multinational military exercises known as African Lion. According to a statement released by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on Sunday, these service members went missing during a recreational hike after the day’s military training activities had concluded. A U.S. defense official, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivities surrounding the situation, provided insights to The Associated Press, clarifying that the soldiers were not engaged in any training exercises at the time they went missing.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening around 9 p.m. near the Cap Draa Training Area, situated close to Tan Tan along the Atlantic coastline. The area is characterized by its challenging mountainous terrain, blending both desert and semi-desert landscapes. In response to the disappearance, a comprehensive search and rescue operation has been initiated, involving a collaborative effort between U.S. and Moroccan forces. AFRICOM confirmed that the search operation is being conducted using helicopters, ships, mountain rescue units, and divers, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

According to the defense official, the soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs in the vicinity of the training area during scheduled maneuvers. The swift response from U.S. and Moroccan personnel underscores the urgency of the search, which remains ongoing as the investigation continues to unfold. The African Lion exercise, which commenced in April, encompasses military forces from multiple nations, including Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, and is set to conclude in early May. Over 7,000 troops from more than 30 countries are engaged in this extensive military drill, making it the largest annual joint military exercise led by the U.S. on the African continent since its inception in 2004.

This exercise serves not only as a platform for enhancing military readiness but also as a crucial opportunity for strengthening regional security cooperation among participating nations. It is worth noting that the African Lion exercises have faced challenges in the past; in 2012, a tragic helicopter crash during the same operations resulted in the deaths of two U.S. Marines and injuries to two others in Agadir. As Morocco continues to be a pivotal ally of the United States in a region marked by instability, the safety of the missing service members is of paramount concern.
