Progress on Morocco's High-Speed Rail Project: A Year of Milestones

As of April 24, 2025, marking one year since the launch of the high-speed rail project connecting Kenitra and Marrakech, the National Office of Railways has confirmed that the construction of this strategic initiative, which spans an impressive 430 kilometers, is progressing according to the established timetable. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize rail travel in Morocco, enhancing connectivity and boosting economic growth.

According to official data, the expropriation processes have been nearly completed, with the majority of the land designated for the project being cleared. This has significantly accelerated the pace of construction. In terms of civil engineering, work is moving forward steadily, with approximately 20 million cubic meters of excavation and embankment completed thus far, alongside a notable advancement in the construction of engineering structures.

Currently, the project includes the construction of 15 major bridges, along with three covered sections at Casablanca Airport, Zenata, and Ain Atiq, totaling 1.5 kilometers in length. Additionally, 92 structures comprising railway and road bridges have been initiated. To support the infrastructure of the rail line, around 2.5 million tons of gravel, 800,000 tons of beams, and over 100,000 tons of rails have been provided, along with 220 railway switch devices.

On a broader scale, this project is part of an expansive investment program valued at 96 billion dirhams, aimed at transforming the railway sector in Morocco. This comprehensive program allocates 53 billion dirhams for the construction of the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail infrastructure, alongside 29 billion dirhams for the acquisition of 168 new trains. Additionally, 14 billion dirhams are earmarked for the maintenance and modernization of the existing network, which will enhance the overall performance of the rail system and support the national economy.
