Prince Moulay El Hassan Opens the 31st International Book and Publishing Fair in Rabat

Celebrating Literature and Culture in Rabat

On April 30, 2026, Prince Moulay El Hassan presided over the grand opening of the 31st International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL) at the OLM-Souissi space in Rabat. This prestigious event, running from May 1 to May 10, is organized under the esteemed patronage of King Mohammed VI. The fair not only highlights Morocco's vibrant cultural landscape but also underscores the country's commitment to promoting knowledge and literature, reflecting the royal vision of a knowledgeable and prosperous society.

During the event, Prince Moulay El Hassan toured various stands, including that of the French Republic, which is the guest of honor for this edition. This participation celebrates the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Morocco and France, reinforcing the multidimensional cooperation fostered under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron. The prince also visited stands dedicated to themes central to this year's fair, such as "Ibn Battuta and the Journey Narrative." He engaged with representatives from various organizations including the National Observatory for Children's Rights and the Mohammed VI Foundation for People with Disabilities, among others.

A Gathering of Knowledge and Culture

This year's fair coincides with Rabat being designated as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026, marking a significant recognition of the city's rich historical heritage. The 31st SIEL features participation from 891 exhibitors, comprising 321 direct exhibitors and 570 indirect ones from Morocco and 60 countries across the Arab, African, European, Asian, and American continents. Attendees can explore an extensive collection of over 130,000 titles, totaling more than 3 million copies, covering a wide array of knowledge and creative expressions.

Under the theme "Ibn Battuta and the Journey Narrative," the fair pays homage to the famed 14th-century Moroccan traveler whose journeys transcended borders and cultures, promoting mutual understanding and peace. This edition is set to attract not only book lovers but also intellectuals and creators from diverse backgrounds, fostering an enriching exchange of ideas. The cultural program will feature numerous Moroccan and international researchers and writers, engaging audiences through thematic conferences, poetry evenings, and new publication presentations. A special tribute will honor notable Moroccan literary figures whose contributions have shaped the nation's literary history since the 9th century.

Children will also find a dedicated space at the fair, inspired by "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, offering immersive programming designed to inspire curiosity and imagination. As part of the festivities, Prince Moulay El Hassan was received with honors, reflecting the importance of this cultural gathering in promoting literature and the arts in Morocco.
