Political Turmoil in Fes: Calls for Resignation amid Allegations of Administrative Failures
In a heated session of the extraordinary council of Fes, members expressed their discontent with the city’s administration, calling for the resignation of the mayor due to what they described as severe failures in managing the city. The session, which took place yesterday, was marked by intense political disputes among council members, despite a low turnout of just over thirty of the ninety-one councilors, as many had previously been unable to attend due to a lack of quorum in earlier sessions.
Opposition members took the opportunity to criticize the mayor during discussions about the agenda. Their absence raised eyebrows, particularly regarding the coalition that is currently managing the city’s affairs, which has faced scrutiny since its formation in the last elections. Councilor Ali Boumehdi highlighted the halt in the redevelopment project of the central market on Mohammed V Street, attributing it to errors in the initial studies that led to an abrupt stop in construction. In a direct address to the mayor, he inquired whether he was aware of the stoppage, urging him to realize the implications of such a failure and questioning the management of public funds.
Mohamed Khyii, the coordinator of the Justice and Development team within the council, echoed these sentiments by criticizing the administration’s handling of city matters. He pointed out the arbitrary allocation of ten million dirhams to support the local football club, suggesting that it reflected a broader trend of mismanagement. Khyii went further to demand an apology from the mayor to the citizens of Fes, insisting that the current administration had failed miserably in its duties. He called for the mayor to step down, stating that such a failure is unacceptable for the residents of the city.
