National Union of Justice Employees Calls for Protection of Labor Freedoms in Morocco

Union's Urgent Appeal for Justice Sector Reforms

In recent developments, the National Union of Justice Employees, a member of the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), has raised serious concerns regarding the deteriorating working conditions faced by employees in the justice sector in the city of Fez. During a meeting held on the evening of April 29, 2026, the local office of the union deliberated on the structural deficiencies and alarming accumulations that are undermining the work environment and directly impacting the dignity of employees and the efficiency of the judicial system.

Following a thorough and responsible discussion, the local union office issued a series of statements highlighting key issues. Firstly, the union expressed its unwavering solidarity with a member of the national office from Tangier, who has faced undue pressure and systematic targeting due to legitimate union activities. The union condemned the Ministry of Justice's reliance on listening procedures based on malicious reports and unfounded allegations from the head of the registry department at the Court of Appeal in Tangier. Such actions not only violate the rights of union activists but also represent a blatant attack on labor freedoms and a severe infringement on constitutional rights that have been earned through decades of struggle and sacrifice by the labor movement.

Secondly, the union reiterated its urgent demands for the Ministry of Justice to intervene immediately to address the critical shortage of human resources across various courts in Fez, particularly at the Commercial Court, which has been facing exceptional difficulties following the merger with the Court in Meknes. This situation has led to an unprecedented increase in workload and has created a stifling professional pressure that threatens the normal functioning of the judicial facility.

Furthermore, the union called for the swift modernization and renewal of essential equipment at the Commercial Court to meet the minimum standards for a vital and strategic service. This includes providing offices, chairs, computers, printers, and administrative furniture to ensure decent working conditions and enhance productivity and service quality.

Additionally, the union expressed its strong disapproval of the local director of justice's continued imposition of restrictive measures that infringe upon constitutionally and legally guaranteed rights and freedoms. This includes depriving the local office of basic tools for union work and communication, such as bulletin boards, despite repeated requests. The unjustified refusal to engage in local meetings reflects a clear disregard for social dialogue principles and an unacceptable evasion of the responsibility to interact with union partners.

The union further demanded the establishment of cafeterias in the Courts of Appeal and the Commercial Court, as well as the Family Court, to ensure respectful services at prices that consider the purchasing power of employees while adhering to quality and health safety standards.

Lastly, the union expressed deep concern over the apparent ineffectiveness of the Mohammedian Institution for Justice Employees in fulfilling its roles, particularly in managing employee affairs transparently and equitably. The excessive bureaucracy and unjustified delays in processing membership cards and consumer loans exacerbate the social and financial crises that employees face rather than alleviating them.

In light of these issues, the local office urged all members of the National Union of Justice Employees in Fez to participate actively in the May Day demonstration organized by the regional union of the Moroccan Labor Union, emphasizing their commitment to the struggles of the working class and their dedication to solidarity and unity in their fight for rights and gains.

The local union office remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the legitimate and fair rights of justice employees and is determined to continue advocating for all proposed demands to ensure the dignity of employees and improve their working conditions.
