Morocco Unveils Its Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2026

Morocco Celebrates Its Artistic Presence at the Venice Biennale

On May 8, 2026, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch officially inaugurated the Moroccan Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, which will continue through November 2026 in the historic Italian city. This significant event was held under the royal directive of King Mohammed VI and was attended by notable figures, including the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; the President of the National Museum Foundation, Mehdi Qotbi; and the Moroccan ambassador to Rome, Youssef Balla. The pavilion's commissioner, Mohamed Benyacoub, was also present during this momentous occasion.

Located in the heart of the Arsenale, the Moroccan Pavilion showcases the project titled "Asǝṭṭa," led by the talented artist Amina Agueznay and curatorial expert Meryem Berrada. This project emerged victorious from a competitive selection process initiated by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, which received 29 submissions from various Moroccan artists and curators. The selection jury, chaired by Mehdi Qotbi, recognized the project's potential to highlight Morocco's rich heritage while resonating with contemporary artistic expressions.

Highlighting Moroccan Heritage Through Contemporary Art

"Asǝṭṭa" serves as a vibrant testament to the depth of Moroccan culture, placing a strong emphasis on traditional craftsmanship as a means of artistic storytelling. This initiative aligns with the overarching theme of this year's Biennale, "In Minor Keys," encouraging a dialogue that intertwines historical narratives with modern artistic practices. Morocco's participation in the Venice Biennale aims to illuminate the diversity of national artistic creation, fostering a connection between Moroccan artists and the broader international discourse surrounding contemporary art evolution.

Established in 1895, the Venice Biennale stands as one of the premier global events for contemporary art, taking place every two years in alternating years with the Architecture Biennale. Morocco's presence at this prestigious event not only showcases its artistic talent but also enriches the global artistic landscape, reinforcing the importance of cultural exchange and dialogue among nations.
