Morocco Releases Senegalese Football Fans After Serving Sentences

Release of Senegalese Fans Marks a New Chapter

On April 18, 2026, Morocco took a significant step by releasing three Senegalese football fans from prison after they completed their three-month sentences. These fans had been incarcerated due to their involvement in the violent incidents that erupted during the Africa Cup of Nations final held in Rabat. An Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist witnessed their release from Al Arjat 2 prison, situated northeast of the capital. The fans were escorted in a police vehicle to a nearby police station before being finally released. As they exited the police station, the three fans, visibly relieved and smiling, were welcomed by representatives from the Senegalese embassy. One of the fans joyfully exclaimed, "dima Maroc, dima Maghrib," which translates to "long live Morocco," reflecting a spirit of goodwill despite their recent ordeal.

The Senegalese defense attorney, Patrick Kabou, expressed gratitude towards the diplomatic and consular teams for their relentless efforts in securing the fans' release. In a message posted on X, he also urged the public to support the released individuals as they navigate the emotional transition back to freedom. This release, however, comes amid ongoing concerns, as 15 other Senegalese fans remain behind bars, facing sentences that range from six months to one year, confirmed through appeal on Monday. They had also been detained since the final match on January 18, which Senegal initially won but was later awarded to Morocco following an appeal. The charges against these fans included "hooliganism," a serious offense that encompasses violent actions, particularly against law enforcement, vandalism of sports facilities, pitch invasions, and the throwing of projectiles.

In a related development, another individual, a French national of Algerian descent, was also released on the same day after serving a three-month sentence for throwing a water bottle during the contentious final. This series of releases highlights the complexities surrounding sports-related violence and the legal proceedings that follow such incidents, as well as the diplomatic efforts that often play a crucial role in resolving international disputes arising from sporting events.
