EasyJet Expands Its Footprint in Morocco, Joining Ryanair in a Commitment to Tourism

Until recently, Ryanair was the only airline making significant strides in the Moroccan aviation market. While Transavia offers numerous routes, the true measure of commitment from an airline is seen in its established bases, which indicate a robust operational presence on the ground. Ryanair, the Irish low-cost carrier, has long held the lead in this regard, operating bases in Marrakech, Fez, Agadir, Tangier, and now, Rabat. Notably, Ryanair has chosen not to establish a base in Casablanca, the largest airport in Morocco, as its primary focus remains on attracting European travelers.

However, Ryanair's monopoly has recently been challenged as EasyJet has entered the fray, opening a new base in Marrakech, Morocco's quintessential tourist destination. Similar to Ryanair, EasyJet benefits from public support, with the Moroccan Tourism Office providing financial backing, although the specifics of this collaboration have not been disclosed to the public.

EasyJet's commitment to Marrakech includes the deployment of three aircraft, marking a significant investment that is expected to create around one hundred jobs in the area. This strategic move aligns with Morocco's ongoing efforts to boost its tourism sector, which has shown promising results. With an expanded fleet, EasyJet is poised to enhance its existing routes and introduce new services to various European cities where it currently lacks a base. Previously, EasyJet operated 52 routes solely from other European airports, but this expansion allows for greater connectivity.

New routes announced by EasyJet include destinations such as Prague, Newcastle, Zurich, Lille, Strasbourg, and Hamburg. Furthermore, the airline is bolstering its services on established routes, including Nantes to Essaouira, Bordeaux to Agadir, and Birmingham to Agadir, thereby enhancing travel options for passengers.
