Moroccan Government Moves to Expand Citizenship Rights
The Moroccan government has officially introduced a legislative proposal aimed at granting citizenship to the children and grandchildren of Moroccan Jews who have emigrated over the years. This initiative, announced on Wednesday, has been submitted to the Parliament after acquiring the requisite number of supporting signatures, as confirmed by the Ministry of Relations with Parliament.
The proposal, which is grounded in various legal references including royal directives related to the rights of Moroccan Jews and the provisions of the Moroccan Constitution, was directed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami. The move seeks to address the historical grievances faced by many descendants of Moroccan Jews who were unable to retain their citizenship due to various factors including distance, political conditions, and difficulties in travel.
According to the National Portal for Citizen Participation, the proponents of this legislative request argue that it aims to ensure that these individuals enjoy their constitutional, political, religious, cultural, economic, and social rights, thus facilitating their integration into Moroccan society. The Moroccan Constitution underscores the importance of national unity and the preservation of the country's diverse identity, which comprises various cultural influences including Arab, Berber, and Jewish heritage.
Interestingly, while the exact number of Moroccan Jews living abroad remains unclear, estimates suggest that there are approximately 1,500 Jews still residing in Morocco. The legislative proposal requires at least 20,000 signatures from citizens to advance to the House of Representatives, showcasing an organized effort by the community to reclaim lost rights.
If the proposal is accepted by the House, it will move forward in the legislative process and, upon approval, will be enacted following its publication in the official gazette.
