Transition in Diplomatic Leadership in the Canary Islands
Morocco is set to initiate a transition in its diplomatic representation in the Canary Islands, as Fatiha Kamouri, the current consul, prepares to conclude her four-year tenure. Sources close to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate that the position of consul general in Las Palmas, along with similar roles in Almería, Tarragona, and Murcia, has been opened for an internal competition aimed at finding a successor. This transition is expected to occur in September, with Kamouri's departure from the archipelago anticipated in July. However, it is important to note that, as of now, the decision has not been officially announced by the consular body.
Fatiha Kamouri took over the consulship in 2022, succeeding Ahmed Moussa, who faced criticism from the Canary authorities regarding his lack of action in the maritime boundary negotiation disputes. Prior to her current role in the Canary Islands, Kamouri served as the consul of Morocco in Bilbao for six years. Despite her Sahrawi heritage, her appointment has not led to significant alterations in the institutional relationships between Morocco and the Canary Islands, mirroring the situation of her predecessor.
