Morocco's Innovative Step Towards Renewable Energy

In a significant move towards sustainable energy management, Morocco has initiated the construction of its first waste-to-energy facility in the Greater Casablanca region. This ambitious project is designed to process approximately 1.5 million tons of municipal waste annually, aiming to generate enough electricity to power around one million residents. The venture is being developed by a consortium that includes Nareva, Kanadevia Inova, and the Japanese company Itochu, under a concession agreement that spans 33.5 years.

According to a press release issued by Kanadevia Inova on August 4, contracts for electricity procurement have been established with SRM Casablanca-Settat and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). The consortium is currently focused on the engineering, procurement, and construction phases, while also advancing initial implementations of the project.

Environmental Benefits and Economic Impact

This innovative plant is set to serve the Greater Casablanca area by integrating waste treatment, landfill management, and renewable electricity production. One of its primary goals is to increase the waste recovery rate to about 80%, thereby reducing reliance on landfilling. The facility will have a base capacity of approximately 126 MWe, supplemented by 50 MWc of solar energy and 4 MW derived from landfill biogas, targeting an annual production close to 1 TWh of electricity.

Located near the Mediouna landfill, this installation is expected to play a pivotal role in lowering greenhouse gas emissions by diverting waste from landfills towards energy recovery. Once operational, the project will create around 140 permanent, skilled jobs, while the construction phase will employ approximately 1,240 workers over three and a half years, along with an additional 300 jobs related to ancillary infrastructure.

Kanadevia Inova will lead the engineering, procurement, and construction efforts, providing operational support, long-term maintenance, and financial participation in the facility's development. This project not only represents a stride towards environmental sustainability but also showcases Morocco's commitment to advancing its energy landscape.
