Morocco Launches First UN Tourism Innovation Hub in Africa

Morocco Takes the Lead in Tourism Innovation for Africa

In a landmark move for the African tourism sector, Morocco has officially inaugurated the United Nations Tourism Thematic Office on Innovation for Africa in its capital, Rabat. This pioneering facility represents the first of its kind on the continent, underscoring Morocco's increasing influence in shaping the future of regional tourism development. The office was launched in a ceremony attended by Morocco’s Tourism Minister, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, and the UN Tourism Secretary-General, Shaikha Al Nowais, highlighting the collaborative effort between national and international entities to enhance tourism in Africa.

This new office is strategically designed to bolster the UN Tourism Agenda 2030 for Africa, positioning tourism as a vital engine for economic growth, job creation, and digital transformation. Officials have articulated that the hub will serve as an operational platform dedicated to various initiatives, including training programs, innovation forums, and support mechanisms for startups. There will be a strong emphasis on equipping the workforce with the necessary skills to thrive in an increasingly digital tourism landscape across African nations.

Strengthening Africa's Tourism Sector Through Innovation

The UN Tourism Secretary-General emphasized that this initiative is not merely a symbolic gesture but a concrete, action-driven structure aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and enhancing the readiness of the workforce for emerging tourism markets. Morocco views the establishment of this office as an integral part of its broader strategy to attract 20 million international visitors annually, positioning the nation as a regional leader and a gateway to innovation in Africa’s tourism sector.

Minister Ammor articulated that this initiative reflects Morocco’s dedication to South-South cooperation, affirming the country’s ambition to be a reliable partner for international organizations focused on sustainable development within Africa. The establishment of the office follows a series of agreements signed in 2025 in Marrakech and Segovia, which laid down the legal and operational foundations necessary for this new institution to thrive.

Authorities anticipate that the Rabat hub will not only encourage cross-border collaboration but also promote innovative tourism models that can create new job opportunities for young people, thereby enhancing the resilience and competitiveness of Africa's tourism sector as a whole.
