Revolutionizing Identity Management in Morocco
Morocco is making significant strides in modernizing its public administration by digitizing the renewal process for its electronic national identity card (CNIE). The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has announced a series of innovative digital services aimed at simplifying the bureaucratic procedures associated with ID renewal. This initiative, unveiled during an open house event in Rabat from May 18 to May 22, is designed to alleviate congestion at registration centers and enhance the overall experience for Moroccan citizens.
Under the new system, individuals whose CNIE is nearing expiration will be able to manage a substantial portion of the renewal process online. This includes filling out applications, uploading necessary documents, and making electronic payments—all through the DGSN's digital platforms such as Epolice.ma and cnie.ma. This streamlined approach not only allows for pre-filling of applications but also enables users to track their residency certificate requests and complete payments before a final in-person appointment for biometric verification, ultimately saving time and reducing the need for unnecessary travel.
Embracing the Digital Age: A Mobile Application for Identity
As part of this ambitious reform, Moroccan authorities are also set to launch a mobile application named "Mon e-ID." This app will facilitate the storage of a secure digital version of the identity card on smartphones, making it accessible even on devices lacking NFC technology. Furthermore, the DGSN has assured the public of enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect personal information and ensure the safety of online transactions.
This initiative is more than just a step towards digital convenience; it is part of Morocco's broader strategy to digitize public services comprehensively. With the country already recognized for its advancements in e-government, as evidenced by a notable e-government development index score of 0.6841 in 2024, the current efforts reflect Morocco's commitment to keeping pace with increasing digital adoption. By the end of March 2025, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) reported that Morocco had recorded nearly 40 million internet subscriptions, achieving a penetration rate exceeding 108%. As internet use continues to grow, the digitization of identity procedures is seen as a pivotal move to enhance interactions between citizens and governmental services while reinforcing online security.
