Morocco Champions South-South Cooperation at UN Conference in Colombia

Morocco's Commitment to Global Solidarity

During a significant meeting of the United Nations in Santa Marta, Colombia, King Mohammed VI's vision for South-South cooperation was highlighted as a testament to Morocco's unwavering solidarity with the nations of the Global South. Omar Hilale, Morocco's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, articulated this commitment at the expanded Bureau meeting of the United Nations High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation, an event that Morocco is proud to chair. Hilale emphasized that this strategic approach is a fundamental aspect of Morocco's diplomatic efforts, underlining the country's long-standing advocacy for an action-oriented model of cooperation grounded in solidarity, particularly with African nations, as well as countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

Hilale pointed out the critical role played by the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation in fostering these valuable partnerships, reinforcing Morocco's position as a leader in promoting collaborative efforts among developing nations. As the world edges closer to the 2030 deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the importance of South-South and triangular cooperation has never been more pronounced. The Moroccan diplomat noted that the current global landscape, characterized by geopolitical tensions, climate challenges, and a decline in public development aid, necessitates a robust framework for cooperation among developing countries.

Expanding South-South Trade and Collaboration

In his address, Hilale highlighted the significant shifts occurring within the global economy, revealing that South-South trade now constitutes over one-third of worldwide trade and is expanding at a pace that outstrips trade between northern and southern countries. This growth in trade is accompanied by increasing investment flows, enhanced development financing, and a flourishing exchange of technology, knowledge, and public solutions among Global South nations. These developments are empowering countries in the South to assert greater control over their development trajectories.

The three-day conference, convened by Colombia's presidential cooperation agency in collaboration with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the United Nations Development Programme, is drawing together representatives from UN regional groups, development banks, the private sector, and various cooperation agencies from Latin America. The discussions at this important gathering are set to revolve around the proposed establishment of a Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation under the auspices of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation. This initiative is seen as a vital move towards enhancing international coordination and fortifying partnerships, resource sharing, and knowledge exchange among member states, UN agencies, development banks, and regional organizations. Ultimately, the alliance aspires to address the priorities and needs of participating countries while strengthening collaborative efforts across the Global South.
