Marrakech has become the focal point for discussions on sustainable housing as it hosts the 58th session of the Francophone Housing Network on May 8 and 9, 2026. This significant event, organized under the auspices of the Ministry of National Land Planning, Urbanism, Housing, and City Policy, and facilitated by the Al Omrane Group, is themed "Towards an Integrated Approach for Sustainable Affordable Housing." The conference brings together a diverse array of experts, professionals, institutional stakeholders, and partners from various Francophone countries, alongside distinguished Moroccan and international figures, to tackle pressing challenges related to affordable housing and sustainable urban development.
The opening session saw key figures in attendance, including the Minister of National Land Planning, Urbanism, Housing, and City Policy, along with the Secretary of State for Housing, Mr. Adib Benbrahim, and the President of the Al Omrane Group, who also leads the Francophone Housing Network. Representatives from international organizations and experts in the fields of housing, urban planning, and land development enriched the discussions with their insights.
During the inaugural speeches, the importance of adopting an integrated approach to land development was emphasized, aligning with the royal directives aimed at reducing social and spatial disparities while enhancing access to decent and sustainable housing. Notably, the 2024-2028 direct housing support program was highlighted as a qualitative shift in Morocco's housing policies, focusing on providing direct assistance to families based on principles of equity and transparency.
The conference features a series of seminars and roundtable discussions that delve into topics such as affordable and sustainable housing, resilience of territorial areas, innovations in housing production models, urban governance, and the exchange of experiences among member countries. Established in 1987, the Francophone Housing Network comprises stakeholders and institutions from 14 French-speaking countries, including Morocco, France, Canada, Belgium, Senegal, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Cameroon, all working towards enhancing cooperation and developing policies related to social and affordable housing.
Morocco's hosting of this session underscores the country's growing stature on both regional and international platforms concerning housing and urban development, amidst a national drive aimed at achieving balanced and sustainable urban development, reinforcing spatial cohesion, and improving the quality of life.
