Human Rights Activist Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Fraud and Money Laundering

The primary court has recently sentenced human rights activist Abdelilah Tatouche, who serves as the president of the National Association for the Defense of Human Rights and the Protection of Public Funds, to 18 months in prison along with a fine of 20,000 dirhams. This ruling comes in the wake of a legal case initiated by a well-known businessman in the city of Marrakech. The verdict was delivered after the defendant was held in custody, facing charges of "fraud," "money laundering," and "extorting money through threats of disclosing shameful matters."

This case has garnered significant attention from observers of human rights and judicial affairs in recent months, particularly given the position from which the accused portrayed himself as the head of an association dedicated to defending human rights and safeguarding public funds. Following a thorough discussion of the case and testimonies from various parties, the judicial body found the defendant guilty and imposed a prison sentence alongside a specified financial penalty.

It is noteworthy that members of the regional judicial police in Marrakech arrested the individual in mid-February based on a complaint lodged by a businessman from the city, after which he was presented to the competent public prosecutor's office, which ordered his prosecution while in custody.
