Marat Safin's Transformation: From Tennis Rebel to Zen Mentor

Marat Safin: A Journey from Tennis Stardom to Tranquility

Marat Safin, once a formidable force on the tennis court known for both his immense talent and unpredictable temperament, has undergone a remarkable transformation since his retirement over 15 years ago. The Russian tennis star, a two-time Grand Slam champion who claimed the US Open in 2000 and the Australian Open in 2005, was renowned not only for his exceptional skills but also for his notorious outbursts, which included smashing rackets—reports vary, with some claiming he destroyed over a thousand, while others suggest the number was closer to 700. His career was punctuated by moments of controversy, such as the infamous occasion when he played a final in Melbourne under the influence of alcohol.

In a stark contrast to his past, Safin has embraced a more serene lifestyle since stepping away from competitive play. He returned to the tennis scene last year as an advisor to Andrey Rublev, currently ranked 12th in the world. Although he is not the primary coach, his influence is undeniable. Just a few weeks ago, while Rublev was competing in Barcelona under the guidance of his long-time coach Fernando Vicente, Safin took a break to embark on a backpacking adventure in Morocco. He shared glimpses of his journey on Instagram, highlighting the beauty of the Moroccan landscape, camping under the stars, cooking outdoors, and connecting with locals—all without the trappings of luxury or the stress associated with his former life.

Meanwhile, as Safin enjoyed his tranquil getaway, Rublev was making headlines by reaching the final of the Conde de Godó tournament. In the lead-up to the title match, which he ultimately lost to French player Arthur Fils, Rublev remarked, "I haven't spoken to Marat this week because he is a bit busy. The last time I saw him was on Sunday, and he told me he was expecting good results this week. I laughed and said, 'Okay, then we have a problem.' But somehow, here I am in the final." This match marked the first final for the duo of Rublev and Safin, a partnership that began just over a year ago in preparation for the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 in 2025.

Rublev, who had faced numerous disappointments earlier in the year with only a solitary title from Doha to show for his efforts, sought Safin's guidance at a time when he was grappling with his emotions on the court, often succumbing to fits of anger. Their collaboration, which many skeptics doubted would succeed, has proven fruitful. Over the past year, Rublev has found greater consistency and stability in his performance, with far fewer incidents of racket destruction or disputes with officials interrupting his gameplay.

Reflecting on his relationship with Safin, Rublev shared, "Marat has been an inspiration to me since I was a child. He is a genuinely nice person who has battled his own challenges but has managed to overcome them. Today, he is nothing like the player he once was. He still has some habits from his past, but he has changed significantly." He continued, "He brings me a sense of calm and maturity. When he is around, I feel a sense of peace and think, 'Okay, everything is going to be fine.'" As Rublev continues to grow both personally and professionally, the influence of Marat Safin remains a pivotal part of his journey.
