This year, on the significant occasion of Mawlid al-Nabi, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has graciously issued a royal pardon benefiting a total of 634 individuals, including both inmates and those on probation, who had been sentenced by various courts across the kingdom. The Ministry of Justice has released an official statement detailing the specifics of this royal pardon. The announcement, made in conjunction with the observance of Mawlid al-Nabi for the year 1448 in the Hijri calendar (2026 in the Gregorian calendar), highlights the King's decision to grant relief to a significant number of individuals. The breakdown of those receiving the royal pardon is as follows: among the 619 beneficiaries, 462 are currently incarcerated, and the remaining 157 are on probation.
For those who are currently detained, the pardon includes the following provisions: 13 individuals will have their remaining prison sentences entirely lifted, while 449 others will see a reduction in their sentences. On the other hand, the 157 individuals on probation will also benefit from various forms of clemency, including: 28 individuals will have their prison sentences annulled or shortened, 13 individuals will have their prison sentences reduced while still subject to fines, 112 will have their fines waived, and 4 individuals will receive a pardon from both prison sentences and fines.
Notably, as part of this royal clemency, the King has extended his grace to 15 individuals convicted in cases related to extremism and terrorism. These individuals have publicly affirmed their commitment to the core values and sacred principles of the nation, demonstrating a sincere revision of their ideological stances and a renunciation of extremism. The distribution of pardons among this group includes 9 individuals who will have their prison sentences fully lifted and 6 others who will receive a reduction in their sentences.
