Inauguration of Rabat as the Arab Capital of Information 2026

Official Launch of Rabat, Arab Capital of Information 2026

The celebration program for Rabat as the Arab Capital of Information 2026 was officially inaugurated on May 4, 2026, during the International Salon of Publishing and Book (SIEL). This prestigious distinction, validated by the Council of Arab Ministers of Information affiliated with the Arab League, marks the beginning of a year-long series of activities aimed at showcasing the media, cultural, and intellectual vibrancy of Morocco's capital.

This honor reaffirms Rabat's central role in the Arab media landscape, coinciding with another significant accolade: its designation by UNESCO as the World Book Capital for 2026. This dual recognition underscores the city’s status as a crossroads of culture, publishing, and information on both regional and international stages.

First Conference on Media, Literature, and Digital Transformation

On this occasion, the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication launched an ambitious program, commencing with an international conference focused on the relationship between the press and literature in the digital age. This gathering brought together writers, journalists, experts, and media professionals from various Arab countries to discuss the profound transformations impacting the media and literary sectors, particularly due to the influence of digital technology and artificial intelligence.

The Rabat, Arab Capital of Information 2026 program includes a series of scientific, intellectual, and professional engagements, with themes such as the challenges facing Arab journalism, the growing role of sports journalism in covering major global events, and media literacy in digital environments. Additionally, field visits will be organized for representatives of Arab media to discover the significant projects undertaken by Morocco across various domains, along with tributes to several prominent figures in Arab media.

The Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Ministers of Information, Madi Abdullah Al-Khamis, commended this designation, asserting that it recognizes the rich media and cultural history of Morocco and the efforts made to train a new generation of professionals capable of addressing the challenges of journalism in the digital era. At the 55th ordinary session of the Council, the upcoming Arab Capitals of Information were also announced: Doha in 2027 and Damascus in 2028. This decision includes the development of specific celebration programs, with activities dedicated to Al-Quds Acharif, fostering enhanced cultural and media cooperation across the Arab region.
