Groundbreaking Drone Training Program in Morocco
In a significant development for military education and international cooperation, Morocco hosted the inaugural graduation ceremony for the African Lion 26 drone academics on May 5, 2026. This momentous event took place at the Southern Zone Headquarters in Agadir, where Royal Moroccan Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Mohammed Benlouali delivered remarks celebrating the collaborative efforts in unmanned aircraft system training. The program brought together experts and students from the Moroccan Armed Forces, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Ghana Armed Forces, and U.S. military forces, all united in the goal of enhancing their skills in drone flight operations, reconnaissance, and target identification.
The African Lion exercise, which stands as U.S. Africa Command's largest annual joint military exercise, aims to bolster security capabilities among the U.S., African nations, and their global allies. Running from April 20 to May 8, 2026, the exercise is led by the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and takes place across multiple host nations, including Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia. With the participation of over 5,600 civilian and military personnel from more than 40 countries, the program emphasizes innovative approaches to enhancing regional security through partnership and collaboration.
This inaugural drone training initiative not only marks a pivotal step in military preparedness but also showcases Morocco's commitment to fostering international military cooperation and capacity building in emerging technologies. The collective expertise gained through this program is expected to improve operational effectiveness and enhance the capabilities of participating nations in the realm of unmanned systems.
