Frequent Power Outages in Marrakech: A Call for Accountability

In the urban district of Al-Hisn in Marrakech, residents have been grappling with incessant power outages, with a complete blackout hitting the area on Thursday evening. As of the time of writing this article, over three hours have elapsed without electricity, leaving the local community and business owners in a state of frustration and despair due to the lack of any immediate action to rectify the situation. The suddenness of this power cut, which occurred without prior notice from the regional utility company responsible for managing electricity, has raised significant concerns among the affected populace. They argue that the absence of communication regarding such crucial service disruptions demonstrates a blatant disregard for citizens' rights to be informed, particularly when it comes to vital services that impact their daily lives.

Numerous residents have expressed that this incident is not an isolated case but rather part of an ongoing pattern of recurrent outages that plague the neighborhood almost daily. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the utility company's interventions, which many describe as merely "temporary fixes" that fail to address the underlying issues plaguing the electrical network in the area. The recent power outage coincided with soaring temperatures, exacerbating the suffering of families, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions who rely on cooling systems. Furthermore, many merchants and café owners reported significant financial losses due to spoiled food items kept in refrigerators, in addition to halting their commercial activities for hours. Residents have even reported damage to household electrical appliances, seemingly linked to the frequent power interruptions.

In an attempt to clarify the utility company's stance, residents reached out to its offices, where they were assured that technicians would be dispatched to address the issue. However, as the hours passed without any sign of technical support, tensions and dissatisfaction grew among the residents. They have called upon the regional utility company to take full responsibility and shift from its current approach of temporary interventions to a comprehensive overhaul of the electrical infrastructure in the neighborhood. This overhaul would ensure a stable power supply and protect residents and businesses from recurring losses.

Moreover, the affected community has urgently appealed to the Governor of the Marrakech-Safi region to initiate an investigation into the reasons behind the frequent power outages and to compel the utility company to provide services that meet established quality and continuity standards. Residents are seeking decisive actions to put an end to what they perceive as a daily struggle that burdens families and economic activities in the neighborhood.
