Morocco Secures $234 Million Loan from African Development Bank for Railway Expansion

Morocco's Strategic Investment in Railway Infrastructure

In a significant move to enhance its transportation network, Morocco has obtained a loan amounting to €205 million (approximately $234 million) from the African Development Bank. This financial support is aimed at expanding the high-speed railway network and improving the overall railway infrastructure along one of the busiest transport corridors in the country. The African Development Bank announced this development, emphasizing the purpose of the loan, which is to bolster capacity and operational performance on the railway line connecting Kenitra and Marrakesh. This particular route plays a crucial role in facilitating a substantial volume of passenger and freight transport within Morocco.

As part of its ambitious plans, Morocco is set to invest a staggering $10 billion to further develop its intercity and intra-city railway networks. This includes the establishment of a new high-speed line to Marrakesh, strategically timed in preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2030, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The new high-speed line will extend from Kenitra, located on the Atlantic coast, traversing a distance of 430 kilometers southward to Marrakesh, passing through key cities such as Rabat and Casablanca.

This extensive investment in railway infrastructure not only aims to enhance the efficiency of transport services but also seeks to stimulate economic growth and improve connectivity throughout the region. By upgrading its railway systems, Morocco is positioning itself to better handle the increasing demands of both domestic and international travel, ultimately fostering a more integrated and efficient transportation network.
