EU Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan, Challenging Algeria's Position

European Union Backs Morocco's Autonomy Proposal

In a significant diplomatic move, Kaja Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, reiterated the bloc's support for Morocco's autonomy plan regarding the Sahara during a recent visit to Rabat. This endorsement aligns with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which advocates for the autonomy proposal under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco. Kallas met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, where she emphasized the need for all parties involved in the Sahara conflict to engage in negotiations without any preconditions. The discussions should focus on Morocco's autonomy plan, aimed at reaching a definitive political resolution to the longstanding dispute.

In a joint statement released after the meeting, the EU expressed its full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations concerning Morocco's proposal for autonomy. The European bloc acknowledged that a genuine autonomy arrangement could represent a practical and feasible outcome for the region. Furthermore, the EU praised Morocco's readiness to engage sincerely with all stakeholders to clarify the autonomy plan's arrangements and to delineate what autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty would entail.

This support from the EU comes at a crucial time, as the UN Security Council is expected to convene for two meetings later this month to discuss the Sahara issue. Reports suggest that the Council might make pivotal decisions regarding the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), potentially paving the way for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
