England's World Cup Journey Begins: Tuchel Excited as Morocco Faces Setbacks

Thomas Tuchel is eager to embark on the next chapter of England's World Cup journey in Kansas City, following the conclusion of their training camp in Florida, which featured a closed-door friendly match on Thursday. The England squad, fresh off their runner-up finish in Euro 2024, is considered one of the frontrunners for success this summer. They arrived in West Palm Beach last Monday to acclimatize to the intense heat and humidity characteristic of a North American summer.

As part of their warm-weather preparations, England played two friendly matches in Florida, achieving a narrow 1-0 victory over New Zealand in the sweltering conditions of Tampa, followed by an impressive 3-0 win against Costa Rica in the oppressive heat of Orlando. Head coach Tuchel expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance after the weather-delayed match on Wednesday, stating, "I wished for that, I demanded that. I said before the match that we want to push it to the next level in terms of intensity, commitment, and cohesion, and we succeeded in doing so. We could see the impact of the Arsenal players joining the camp as well as the benefits of our training sessions. The players adapted well to the heat and climate, and we observed a significant improvement in our performance. I am proud of how the team delivered on our expectations."

Tuchel emphasized that while the results are important, the focus remains on how the team plays, asserting that the results will follow suit if the team performs well. With their training camp wrapping up on a high note, England is set to kick off their World Cup campaign against Group L rivals Croatia next Wednesday. They will head to Kansas City on Saturday, where they hope to establish their base until mid-July.

On a different note, Morocco is grappling with the loss of two key players due to injuries, as Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli have been removed from their squad. In their place, Saudi Arabia-based defender Marwane Saadane and striker Amine Sbai have been called up as replacements, as confirmed by the Moroccan federation and FIFA. Aguerd, who has not played since early March due to a groin injury that required surgery, saw his recovery hampered when a fracture of his pubic bone was discovered in April. Despite coach Mohamed Ouahabi's hopes for Aguerd's timely recovery, it was determined on Thursday that he would not be fit for the upcoming tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Ezzalzouli's injury occurred during a recent friendly match against Norway when a teammate accidentally landed on his knee while defending a corner. Although Ezzalzouli attempted to continue playing, he ultimately had to be substituted. Both players were part of the Moroccan squad that reached the semi-finals of the last World Cup in Qatar and also competed in the Africa Cup of Nations final in January. Unfortunately, Aguerd's injury history continues to haunt him, as he was also sidelined during the last World Cup's knockout stage due to injury.

Saadane, who made his debut for Morocco in 2015, has been a sporadic member of the squad since then, while Sbai, primarily a left winger, earned his first cap earlier this month in a World Cup warm-up match against Burundi. Both players are currently training with the Moroccan squad and have been brought to the US as cover. Saadane participated in the recent 1-1 draw with Norway as a substitute, while Sbai was listed among the substitutes. Morocco will commence their Group C campaign in the World Cup against Brazil at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Saturday.
