Ecuador Strengthens Trade Relations with Morocco to Expand Market Access in Africa

Ecuador has successfully concluded its official agenda in Morocco, marked by a series of political, business, and technical meetings led by Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld. The primary focus of these discussions was to enhance bilateral trade, attract investments, and establish Ecuador as a strategic supplier to the African market.

Key activities took place from Thursday to Friday in the city of Tangier, where the Ecuadorian delegation engaged with local authorities, business leaders, and representatives from various productive sectors. Notably, significant progress was made regarding the memorandum of understanding signed between the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (Fedexpor) and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, aimed at bolstering commercial exchanges, generating investment, and promoting employment opportunities.

During the official visit, the Foreign Minister and her team held crucial meetings with the productive sector, including discussions with the OCP Group, focusing on vital topics such as food security, innovation, and development within the phosphate supply chain.

The delegation also toured the Tangier Med port, one of the world’s most significant ports, boasting an annual capacity exceeding 9 million TEUs. This visit was aimed at exploring logistics opportunities and establishing connections with strategic markets.

In these forums, Ecuador showcased its exportable offerings, emphasizing products like bananas, cacao, flowers, and shrimp, all of which hold substantial growth potential in the Moroccan and broader African markets.

On the diplomatic front, Sommerfeld met with regional authorities, including Oulaid Lemsafer, to discuss commerce, investment, security, and logistics. Furthermore, she engaged in dialogue with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, addressing strategic areas such as trade, agriculture, infrastructure, and energy.

The agenda concluded with a meeting with the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, where they reviewed the progress of the commercial memorandum and the outcomes of Ecuador’s Promotion Week in Morocco. The overall assessment of the visit focused on positioning Morocco as a strategic bridge for the expansion of Ecuadorian exports into Africa, representing a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to diversify markets.
