The Impact of Extreme Weather on Bird Migration
This summer's extreme heat has posed significant challenges for many birds, leading to alarming reports from various wildlife organizations. For instance, in Freinsheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, the Stork Center in Bornheim has been tracking the migration of 150 white storks, outfitted with transmitter rings, and already reports ten confirmed fatalities. Wolfgang Fiedler, the head of the Central Animal Marking Office at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Biology, notes that electrocution remains the leading cause of death among storks. Among the casualties is a stork named "Rocky," whose growth was closely monitored by thousands through a live camera feed. The last signal from Rocky was recorded on August 20, approximately 1,200 kilometers away in Zaragoza, Spain, along the Ebro River. Fiedler speculates that Rocky may have suffered an electrocution incident while seeking a roosting spot on a nearby power pole, although this remains conjecture. The likelihood of Rocky being lost due to technical issues is diminishing, as similar concerns arise for two other storks, "Fortuna" and "Schorschi," who also ceased sending signals around the same time.
Currently, most young storks are reported to be in Spain and Morocco or further south towards Senegal, where data transmission is sparse. Fiedler highlights some noteworthy storks, including "Clarinette 12356 AJE91," which was the first to check in from Senegal on August 18, well ahead of others that were just beginning their migratory journey. Another stork, "Rafael 12353 AJE68," has taken an unusual eastern route, reporting its latest data from Syria on September 9. Even more surprisingly, "Sol 12281 ALL01" from Kapsweyer flew first northeast to Saxony and then into the border region between Poland and Slovakia. This year, scientists are observing an unprecedented number of atypical migration strategies, although the relationship between these patterns and the extreme summer conditions, including heat, fires, and drought, remains unclear. Preliminary studies suggest that of the original 150 storks, only about 45 are expected to survive after a year, with mortality attributed to electrocution, predation, accidents, and hunting.
The Alarming State of the Swift Population
In a related note, the "Mauerseglerhilfe Apus" in Gorxheimertal, located in Hessen, has expressed grave concerns regarding the swift population this year. Despite hundreds of successful rehabilitations, the overall situation remains dire, according to chairwoman Jeanette Mayer. The organization has taken in nearly 1,300 swifts and alpine swifts this season, 294 of which were from Rheinland-Pfalz. The latter half of the season has brought significant challenges, with an increasing number of birds arriving with severe feather damage, largely attributed to the extreme heat and the subsequent strain on their health. Additionally, a decrease in insect populations, which are essential food sources for swifts, has further exacerbated the situation, particularly for young and already weakened birds.
Many of the swifts were taken in from private individuals and other facilities where improper care had led to critical health issues, rendering some birds beyond saving. Mayer emphasized the importance of having an intact feather structure for swifts to be successfully released back into the wild, highlighting that many of these birds could have had a better chance of survival with proper care from the beginning. This season has made it abundantly clear that the organization needs to prepare better for future years, as extreme weather events like heatwaves are expected to become more frequent and could lead to increased waves of admissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more knowledgeable volunteers and donations to support these efforts.
Despite the exhaustion and numerous challenging cases, Jeanette Mayer remains optimistic. She states, "Every swift and alpine swift we can return to freedom after weeks of intensive care reinforces our belief in the value of our work."
