Celebrating Moroccan Caftan: A Cultural Legacy Recognized by UNESCO

In a celebratory atmosphere marked by the international recognition of the Moroccan caftan, the city of Marrakech hosted the first press conference for the 26th edition of the Caftan Week. This event follows UNESCO's approval to list the Moroccan caftan as part of the intangible cultural heritage, a milestone that enthusiasts consider the culmination of a long journey in preserving this traditional attire, which has become a symbol of Moroccan identity worldwide.

The conference served as an opportunity to unveil the main outlines of this prominent cultural and artistic event, which has adopted the theme "Nafas Al-Atlas" this year. This theme refers to the deep aesthetic and symbolic significance of the Atlas Mountains in Moroccan imagination, reflecting the rich artisanal and cultural heritage that has inspired caftan makers and creators over the decades.

During the conference, speakers emphasized the importance of the chosen theme, noting that it reflects the caftan's connection to its natural and cultural environment. It also opens avenues for participating designers to draw inspiration from elements of Amazigh heritage, traditional crafts, and the natural materials abundant in the Atlas regions. This infusion of local influences promises to give this year’s showcased designs a unique artistic identity and visual distinctiveness.

As stated by Ishraq Mabsit, director of "Women from Morocco" magazine, this year’s 26th edition of the Caftan event is themed around the Atlas Mountains, not merely as a geographical space but also as a source of inspiration and a wellspring of traditional Moroccan expertise and craftsmanship. She highlighted that the choice of this theme underscores the close ties between the Moroccan caftan and its original environment, reiterating that the organizers always aim to link the presented collections to specific artistic directions that confer a unique identity to the designs.

Mabsit further elaborated that since adopting its new format, the event has aimed for a rich and multi-dimensional program, focusing on various aspects of the Moroccan caftan, particularly the traditional industry and artisanal system that contributes to the continuity of this ancient art. She noted that the Moroccan caftan owes its enduring status and richness across generations to the artisans and craftspeople who have remained faithful to this heritage. Each edition of the event features a dedicated space and exhibition for traditional crafts that aligns with the theme of the organized version.

Discussing future challenges, Mabsit emphasized the importance of "knowledge transfer" as a key focus for this year's edition. She stressed that preserving the Moroccan caftan fundamentally relies on ensuring the transmission of skills and experiences from master artisans to new generations so that these traditions, accumulated over centuries by Moroccans, do not fade away. Additionally, she confirmed that youth hold a central place in this year's program, featuring master classes and showcases for emerging talents. Mabsit pointed out that Morocco is rich in young creative energies capable of revitalizing this sector and infusing it with a new breath that aligns with contemporary changes while maintaining its authenticity.

On his part, Anas Yassine, the artistic director of Caftan Week, highlighted that the novelty of this year's edition lies primarily in the chosen theme, represented by the "Atlas." He considers it a theme rich in colors and steeped in history and traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, which serves as a significant source of inspiration for participating designers. Yassine explained that the organizing committee has also focused on enhancing the artistic aspect of the show by increasing the number of artists who will enliven the platform's evenings, as well as preparing unique artistic displays and special surprises accompanying the caftan shows. Moreover, a new decor has been carefully designed to reflect the spirit and beauty of the Atlas on the showcase stage.

He added that this year’s selection of participating young talents was not easy, as the event management received over a hundred applications before finalizing only ten names for the emerging talents segment. Yassine emphasized that the level of participation was notably high during this edition, attributing this to the chosen theme, which attracted a larger number of young designers who expressed great enthusiasm for working on the theme of "Atlas" and its rich visual and cultural connotations.

Moreover, he noted that recent years have seen an increasing trend among youth toward the world of fashion and caftan, which reflects a new dynamism in this sector and the younger generation's desire to re-present Moroccan heritage with a contemporary vision. Yassine concluded his statements by asserting that this year's showcase will be distinguished by a variety of styles and artistic references, explaining that the audience will discover designs inspired by both local and historical elements, alongside pieces reimagined with a modern twist, all bearing the "Atlas signature" and the elegant touch that characterizes this extraordinary edition.

This year’s edition has a special significance, not only due to the richness of its artistic and cultural program but also because it coincides with the celebration of UNESCO's recognition of the Moroccan caftan as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Organizers view this recognition as a historical moment that reaffirms the caftan's position within the global cultural landscape. The event, which will take place over several days in Marrakech, is expected to feature elite designers, artisans, and artists in a collective celebration of the Moroccan caftan, regarded as a mirror of Moroccan identity and a living memory that embodies centuries of creativity, craftsmanship, and elegance.
