Cartagena: A Mosaic of Cultures and Nationalities

The Rich Tapestry of Diversity in Cartagena

Cartagena has evolved into much more than just a tourist destination or a historic port; it is now a vibrant city characterized by its profound diversity. Recent demographic data reveals a clear reality: dozens of countries, cultures, and life stories coexist in the daily life of Cartagena. This multicultural environment not only enriches the city’s social fabric but also enhances its economic landscape.

The largest community in Cartagena is undoubtedly Moroccan, with over 12,400 residents, significantly outnumbering other nationalities. Areas such as Rincón de San Ginés and San Antonio Abad are among the hotspots for Moroccans, who are primarily engaged in the agricultural and service sectors. Following them are well-established communities from Latin America, particularly Colombians, Ecuadorians, Venezuelans, Peruvians, and Paraguayans, all of whom contribute to the local economy, especially in caregiving, hospitality, and various service industries.

The migration patterns illustrate two major axes: North Africa and Latin America, alongside a stable European presence. Among the European residents, British citizens often have stable residency, while Romanians, numbering over 700, have a significant labor presence. Additionally, there are communities from France, Italy, Germany, and Belgium, creating a diverse and well-integrated society.

Despite Morocco’s dominance in the African demographic, there is also notable representation from countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Beyond the more prominent nationalities, Cartagena's census reveals intriguing stories of almost invisible communities, with some countries represented by a single resident. This fact highlights the city's remarkable diversity.

Among the more unique cases are individuals from Mozambique and Liberia, whose presence adds to the city's multicultural narrative. This diversity is not merely anecdotal; it permeates the neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and daily life of Cartagena. The city has transitioned from being a mere transit point to a place where thousands have chosen to settle and build their lives.

This growth, however, presents clear challenges such as integration, access to housing, employment, and community coexistence. It is no longer a transient situation but a structural reality that requires collective effort to address.
