Azoulay: The Rise of Extremism in Global Elections – Morocco's Triumph in Managing Diversity

The Global Challenge of Extremism and Morocco's Role in Promoting Diversity

In a stark reflection on contemporary global dynamics, André Azoulay, a prominent royal advisor, emphasized the troubling reality that values are rapidly disintegrating, leading to an increasing inability to foster coexistence among diverse communities. Speaking at a conference entitled "Morocco and the Genius of Coexistence" during the International Book and Publishing Fair in Rabat, Azoulay pointed out the troubling rise of 'chauvinism' in far-right discourses across various nations, noting its alarming success in elections and civil societies, as if we are witnessing a time of denial and fragmentation.

Azoulay articulated the distinctive characteristics of Moroccan identity, which he described as open and inclusive. He asserted that the world mistakenly believed that identity fractures had subsided following the myriad tragedies experienced in modern history; however, these fractures have reemerged with a vengeance, now supported by popular backing. He stated that Morocco has transcended these divisive debates, positioning itself as a global champion of coexistence and community living.

Morocco: A Beacon of Hope Amid Global Division

During his discourse, Azoulay, who hails from Essaouira and is of Jewish faith, urged the audience to seize every opportunity to showcase the Moroccan identity, known as "Tamghrabit." He described this identity as complex and often misunderstood, yet it stands as a symbol of possibility for collaborative living among diverse perspectives. He further emphasized that Morocco is asserting itself on the international stage, having succeeded where many institutions, including the United Nations, have faltered, often surrendering in the face of their failures.

Azoulay stressed that Moroccan civilization has not succumbed to historical amnesia; rather, its historical intersections and extensions are deeply rooted, allowing every individual to feel at home without compromise. He expressed pride in Morocco, stating, "There is no reason for us to refrain from celebrating our country's successes. No one else will do it for us now, but they will in the future." He poignantly reflected on the global climate of hostility, urging all to cling to their identities and sense of self, asserting that the compass lost by the world today is distinctly Moroccan.

He concluded by recognizing that while diversity in many parts of the world often leads to complexity and conflict, Morocco represents a living testament to a peaceful historical legacy that is actively woven into the fabric of its society. Azoulay's remarks affirm that while the world may be regressing in terms of cultural and linguistic diversity management, Morocco is moving forward confidently, fully aware of its history and future direction.
