Agadir Hosts the Global Francophonie Scientific Week: A Landmark Event in 2026

Agadir Set to Host the 6th Global Francophonie Scientific Week

The highly anticipated 6th edition of the Global Francophonie Scientific Week is scheduled to take place in Agadir on October 13, 14, and 15, 2026. This significant event is organized under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and is co-hosted by Ibn Zohr University in collaboration with the University Agency of La Francophonie. This marks a historic milestone for both Morocco and the Souss-Massa region, showcasing Agadir as a burgeoning hub for academic discourse and international collaboration.

As the city prepares to elevate its academic profile on the global stage, the upcoming event is poised to position Agadir among other prominent cities such as Bucharest, Cairo, Quebec, Toulouse, and Dakar that have previously hosted this remarkable gathering. Agadir's ambition is clear: Morocco is stepping beyond a passive role in global discussions to actively organize and lead them.

Significance and Themes of the Event

The central theme for this year’s edition, "In the Face of Global Geopolitical Challenges: What Role for Francophone Scientific Diplomacy?" reflects the urgency and relevance of the current geopolitical landscape. Moving away from a purely academic focus, this theme addresses pressing political matters that are crucial in a world where alliances are shifting, and science serves as both a tool of influence and a collective resource. The importance of the Francophonie community, which spans 300 million speakers across five continents, is more than a rhetorical question; it is a strategic necessity.

Agadir’s selection as the host city—rather than the capital cities of Rabat or Casablanca—underscores the academic maturity of the Souss-Massa region, often stereotypically seen only for its beaches and agricultural exports. The event signals Morocco's commitment to scientific diplomacy as a pivotal element of its foreign policy, investing significantly in educational institutions akin to military investments, and fostering long-term visions towards Africa and the Mediterranean.

With a comprehensive agenda that includes a ministerial conference, scientific forums, a congress focused on Francophone youth, thematic workshops, and bilateral meetings, the three-day event is expected to engage over 900 international speakers from more than 50 countries. This includes ministers of higher education, university presidents, field researchers, and students eager to share their insights.

Reflecting on the success of previous editions that attracted over 21,000 participants, the SMFS 2026 seeks to explore how a Francophone country in the Global South can influence the production and dissemination of knowledge. It also aims to address the dynamics of scientific cooperation, advocating for a more equitable dialogue between the North and South, and leveraging the French language as a vehicle for intellectual empowerment and solidarity among researchers facing similar challenges.

As Agadir prepares to welcome these important discussions in October, the event represents a unique opportunity for Ibn Zohr University and its partners to showcase their contributions and foster sustainable partnerships, collaborative research projects, student mobility, and cooperative initiatives. While there is much work ahead—mobilizing regional economic and institutional stakeholders, involving Moroccan researchers in program development, and ensuring comprehensive media coverage—the essence of this gathering is monumental. For the first time, a city in southern Morocco will host this global forum of Francophone scientific discourse, marking a significant shift in the narrative.
