Zambia Strengthens Support for Morocco's Territorial Integrity Amid Ongoing Sahara Dispute

In a significant diplomatic development, Zambia has reiterated its steadfast support for Morocco's territorial integrity, particularly concerning its southern provinces. The Zambian government has characterized Morocco's autonomy initiative as the most viable solution to the enduring Sahara conflict. This position was made clear during a recent meeting in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, who is currently on a working visit to the North African nation.

Following their discussions, a joint communiqué was released highlighting Zambia’s endorsement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which was adopted on October 31, 2025. This resolution acknowledges Morocco’s autonomy plan as a credible and lasting foundation for a political resolution to the Sahara dispute, reinforcing the importance of national sovereignty. Minister Haimbe articulated Zambia’s strong support for the ongoing efforts by the United Nations to achieve a peaceful resolution to this regional challenge, emphasizing that the Moroccan autonomy proposal stands as the only realistic and mutually agreeable solution.

According to Haimbe, this initiative not only presents a constructive framework conducive to a long-lasting political settlement but also seeks to meet the expectations of all parties involved in the dispute. In response, Minister Bourita expressed appreciation for the progressive strengthening of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Zambia, which have been notably enhanced by the establishment of the Zambian Embassy in Rabat and a Consulate General in Laayoune back in October 2020. The two ministers concluded their discussions by reaffirming their commitment to enhancing cooperation across various sectors, further reflecting the burgeoning partnership between their nations.
