Comprehensive Infrastructure Overhaul in Safi
In response to the devastating floods that struck Safi on December 14, 2025, an integrated and urgent rehabilitation program has been initiated to restore the city's infrastructure and urban spaces. This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of King Mohammed VI to the citizens and aligns with his directives aimed at accelerating the recovery efforts for the affected areas. The primary goal is to enhance the quality of infrastructure and improve the living conditions for the residents of Safi.
The program is part of a broad mobilization involving various governmental sectors and public institutions. The task of overseeing the project has been entrusted to the Marrakech-Safi Housing Company, which is responsible for ensuring that the various scheduled projects are executed according to the highest technical standards and within the specified timelines.
Key Projects and Ongoing Developments
The Marrakech-Safi Housing Company is executing these initiatives in collaboration with several ministries, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of National Planning and Urban Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts. The program aims not only to rehabilitate the damaged infrastructure but also to enhance the attractiveness of Safi while improving the quality of urban spaces. This includes strengthening the city's resilience against natural disasters through a series of structured projects. Key undertakings involve repairing and reinforcing the damaged sections of the old city wall, revitalizing the northern entrance to the historic city, upgrading the road leading to Safi beach, and improving the infrastructure along Hassan II Street.
Work on these projects commenced in April 2026 and is progressing at an advanced pace. The initiatives encompass road strengthening, renewal of wastewater networks, sidewalk renovations, public lighting improvements, and road signage enhancements, all adhering to the latest technical and engineering standards to ensure sustainability and quality services for the local population.
The program is under daily supervision and direct field oversight by the Governor of Safi, who personally monitors the various stages of execution. Regular coordination meetings and continuous field visits are conducted in close collaboration with the relevant ministries and partner institutions, along with the Marrakech-Safi Housing Company, consulting offices, and the construction firms involved. This meticulous approach aims to address any challenges, ensure quality standards are met, and maintain adherence to the timelines established for the program's objectives.
This initiative exemplifies a model of collective mobilization and institutional coordination among various stakeholders to optimally implement royal directives, achieve sustainable urban development, enhance the appeal of Safi, and improve the quality of life for its residents. It reinforces the city’s position as an economic, industrial, and tourist hub within the Marrakech-Safi region.
