Urgent Concerns Over Deteriorating Building in Marrakech's Historic District

The alarming state of a dilapidated house located in the narrow alley of Darb Tiwark, within the Bahía district of the historic city of Marrakech, has sparked significant concern among residents and passersby. The community is on high alert due to warnings of an imminent collapse that poses serious risks to both lives and property.

According to reports and images obtained by the newspaper "Al Omk", the building in question exhibits deep cracks and structural fissures, particularly on an external wall directly facing the alley. This precarious condition renders it vulnerable to collapse at any moment, especially given the heavy foot traffic in the area.

In a statement regarding the situation, community activist Mohamed Chaker emphasized that the condition of the Darb Tiwark house is merely a representation of the numerous dilapidated buildings scattered throughout Marrakech. He underscored that the lives of citizens should not be left hanging by the thread of complicated administrative procedures or technical delays that could ultimately result in tragic scenarios claiming innocent lives.

Chaker recalled several fatal incidents linked to collapsing structures, the most recent of which involved the death of a woman with special needs. He highlighted that these recurring tragedies expose the gap between theoretical assessments and practical interventions.

Explaining the underlying issues, Chaker attributed these incidents primarily to the sluggish implementation of programs aimed at addressing dangerous buildings and the lack of effective coordination among the responsible authorities to ensure prompt responses that protect lives.

He asserted that despite the launch of national and local programs to rehabilitate at-risk structures in Marrakech, the pace of execution remains sluggish, resulting in dire consequences for the safety and lives of citizens.

Moreover, Chaker noted that these ongoing incidents have heightened anxiety among the residents of Darb Tiwark, who reported that the plight of their damaged home has persisted for weeks without meaningful intervention, despite repeated appeals to the relevant authorities.

In a related context, Mohamed Chaker warned of the implications of this ongoing situation on Marrakech's reputation as a global tourist destination, asserting that the safety of both citizens and tourists must take precedence over all other considerations.

In his concluding remarks, Chaker called upon the relevant authorities to dispatch a specialized technical committee to assess the extent of the damage and secure the area immediately, to prevent this location from joining the list of disasters that increasingly characterize the historic neighborhoods of the Red City.
