Morocco's Consulate in the Canary Islands Set for Leadership Transition
Fatiha El Kamouri, the Moroccan consul in the Canary Islands, is preparing to hand over her duties after four years of service in this vital diplomatic role. According to sources close to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the position of consul general in Las Palmas has been opened for internal competition, with the expectation that a career diplomat will assume the role beginning in September. Consequently, Kamouri is expected to conclude her tenure in the archipelago by July. However, insiders within the current consular body indicate that this decision has not yet been made official.
Kamouri succeeded Ahmed Moussa in 2022, a predecessor who faced scrutiny from Canarian authorities for his perceived inaction during the maritime boundary negotiations. Prior to her assignment in the Canary Islands, Fatiha Kamouri served as the Moroccan consul in Bilbao for six years, bringing a wealth of experience to her current position. Like Moussa, she has Sahrawi heritage, yet her appointment has not led to any significant changes in institutional relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
