Three Senegalese Hooligans and One Franco-Algerian Released After Serving Three Months in Moroccan Prison

Release of Hooligans Following Violent Incident

In a significant development, three Senegalese football fans were released from a Moroccan prison on Saturday after completing a three-month sentence. Their incarceration stemmed from violent incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final held in Rabat on January 18, as reported by various news outlets, including AFP.

The trio exited Al Arjat 2 prison, located northeast of the Moroccan capital, under police escort, before being taken to a police station near Salé, where they were officially released in the presence of representatives from the Senegalese embassy. Upon their release, one of the fans expressed joy, exclaiming "dima Maroc, dima Maghrib," showcasing a spirit of appreciation towards Morocco despite the circumstances.

These individuals were apprehended on the night of the AFCON final and were found guilty of hooliganism. Their crimes included assaulting law enforcement officers, vandalism, throwing projectiles, and attempting to invade the pitch. Additionally, it is worth noting that in the same case, fifteen other Senegalese supporters remain incarcerated, facing sentences ranging from six months to one year, as confirmed in a recent appeal.

Moreover, a French national of Algerian descent was also released on the same day after serving three months for throwing a water bottle and inciting violence during the tumultuous match. The AFCON final was marred by controversy, particularly in the closing minutes when a penalty was awarded to Morocco, while a goal by Senegal was disallowed, igniting outrage among the Senegalese players who temporarily left the field. Despite the chaos, the match resumed, with Morocco missing their penalty, ultimately leading to Senegal's victory of 1-0 in extra time, thanks to a goal by Pape Gueye. Subsequently, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) penalized the Senegalese team for leaving the pitch, awarding the 2025 AFCON to Morocco, a decision that Senegal has contested at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
