Switzerland's Support for Morocco's Autonomy Initiative
Switzerland has officially expressed its backing for Morocco's autonomy proposal concerning the Western Sahara, characterizing it as the "most serious, credible, and pragmatic" foundation for addressing this enduring dispute. This endorsement was articulated in a joint statement following discussions between Ignazio Cassis, the Vice-President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of Foreign Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, who is currently on a working visit to Bern.
In the statement released on April 24, Switzerland emphasized that it regards Morocco's autonomy initiative as the most viable framework for achieving a political resolution to the complex issue surrounding the Moroccan Sahara. Furthermore, Bern commended the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, asserting that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a most feasible solution" to the conflict.
The Swiss government reiterated its commitment to the vital role of the United Nations in facilitating a resolution, alongside its support for the ongoing endeavors of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy. This position aligns with a growing chorus of nations that are rallying behind Morocco's autonomy plan, which the Moroccan government has consistently championed as a realistic and enduring solution to the long-standing regional conflict over the Sahara.
The renewed endorsement from Switzerland is perceived as a significant step in bolstering international momentum in favor of Morocco’s stance on the issue. This shift is largely driven by diplomatic initiatives aimed at consolidating recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty while promoting the autonomy proposal as a viable compromise solution.
